Reducing tooth sensitivity: Protection for sensitive teeth

Sensitive teeth are a sign of weakened enamel. If the dentine is exposed, stimuli are transmitted directly to the nerve. Bioniq® seals the exposed dentinal tubules with 20% artificial enamel, effectively reducing sensitivity.

Causes: The origin of pain stimuli

Anyone who suffers from sensitive teeth will know the sudden, sharp pain. In most cases, the reason for sensitivity is exposed tooth necks: either the tooth enamel is damaged, or the gums have receded, leaving the dentine exposed and allowing stimuli to be passed directly to the nerve.

Enamel defects and gum recession can have the following causes:

    Acidic foods

    Acids in food dissolve minerals from the tooth enamel. If this happens repeatedly, the enamel becomes increasingly thin and the dentine is exposed.

    Chewing and brushing

    Mechanical stress, such as brushing too vigorously, chewing or grinding one’s teeth, can cause damage to the tooth enamel. The areas around the neck of the tooth are often affected.

    Gum disease

    In particular, inflammatory gum diseases (gingivitis, periodontitis) cause the gums to recede, exposing the sensitive necks of the teeth.
