Apatites, such as hydroxyapatite, are minerals and belong to the class of calcium phosphates. There are a number of different calcium phosphates. Hydroxyapatite is the most stable and, for humans, the most important calcium phosphate, as it forms the mineral phase of teeth and bones. The chemical formula for hydroxyapatite is Ca5(PO4)3(OH).
Hydroxyapatite plays an essential role in the human body. It forms the basis of teeth and bones. In both cases, hydroxyapatite is responsible for their hardness. Compared to many other key ingredients in dental care, hydroxyapatite is a substance produced naturally by the body.
Many whitening toothpastes typically contain highly abrasive particles and/or peroxides, which aggressively remove stains but can damage teeth and enamel and often cause tooth sensitivity. The resulting roughened tooth surface can actually cause new stains to adhere even more strongly.
The whitening technology in Bioniq® White Filler Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste has the opposite effect: whitening ingredients help gently and effectively remove discoloration. White hydroxyapatite creates a microfine white layer forms on the tooth surface. The teeth also feel smoother right away.
